And yet,\u00a0<em>On Phillips Creek<\/em>\u00a0is utterly familiar, especially to those of us in Appalachia who know how coal can be valued more than life, and how a family is built on generations of women who have always had to make hard choices. And how sometimes we look back at loss with gratitude.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013Denton Loving<\/strong>, author of\u00a0<em>Tamp<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natalie Kimbell<\/strong>, as poet, declares herself a \u201criver of women\u2019s stories,\u201d a conduit for the voices of those who have gone on\u2014a grandmother rescued from certain death by a miracle drug, an aunt who \u201csinges the air\u201d with kin-cursing, a father beloved despite his faults, even the deceased second wife of her former husband\u2014and those still present\u2014a mother, a granddaughter who earnestly pleads for her grandmother, who she thinks will soon join \u201cthe book of the dead,\u201d to \u201ctell the family my name \u2026 tell them I\u2019m coming.\u201d And so the poet does, tells us readers the names of those people and places that have formed her, that even now flow like a river, carrying her around bends where even more stories wait to be told.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013Connie Jordan Green<\/strong>, author of\u00a0<em>Slow Children<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Regret Comes to Tea<\/em>\u00a0(both from Finishing Line Press),\u00a0<em>Household Inventory<\/em>\u00a0(winner of the Brick Road Poetry Prize), and\u00a0<em>Darwin\u2019s Breath<\/em>\u00a0(Iris Press).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this elegiac\u00a0collection,<strong>\u00a0Natalie Kimbell<\/strong>\u00a0pays homage to both family and place rooted in the mountains of Virginia\u2013a family and place she once longed to leave and now journeys back to in line and stanza.
