The poems from\u00a0On Phillips Creek<\/em>\u00a0are born from a place that no longer exists except in the writer\u2019s heart, and perhaps they are made stronger for being so well kept within that private landscape. And yet,\u00a0On Phillips Creek<\/em>\u00a0is utterly familiar, especially to those of us in Appalachia who know how coal can be valued more than life, and how a family is built on generations of women who have always had to make hard choices. And how sometimes we look back at loss with gratitude.<\/p>\n

Natalie Kimbell<\/strong>, as poet, declares herself a \u201criver of women\u2019s stories,\u201d a conduit for the voices of those who have gone on\u2014a grandmother rescued from certain death by a miracle drug, an aunt who \u201csinges the air\u201d with kin-cursing, a father beloved despite his faults, even the deceased second wife of her former husband\u2014and those still present\u2014a mother, a granddaughter who earnestly pleads for her grandmother, who she thinks will soon join \u201cthe book of the dead,\u201d to \u201ctell the family my name \u2026 tell them I\u2019m coming.\u201d And so the poet does, tells us readers the names of those people and places that have formed her, that even now flow like a river, carrying her around bends where even more stories wait to be told.<\/p>\n

Poignant\u00a0and passionate, these poems bring Phillip\u2019s Creek to life\u2013the characters and natural landscape of Kimbell\u2019s birth and of her spirit. We are made passionate along with her as \u201cmold of earth and time [thread] the air.\u201d<\/p>\n
